THE FIELD GUIDE / Liquid Culture

What Is Shiitake Liquid Culture?

Shiitake liquid culture contains live Shiitake mushroom mycelium suspended in a sterile nutrient solution, allowing growers to inoculate grain spawn and substrate with vigorous, proven genetics. Liquid culture provides a faster and more reliable alternative to spores by introducing actively growing mycelium directly into sterile growing media.

Shiitake mushrooms, scientifically called Lentinula edodes are one of the most widely cultivated gourmet mushroom species in the world, known for their rich umami flavour, dense texture, and traditional culinary use throughout Asia and beyond. They are especially valued for their deep savoury profile and ability to thrive on hardwood based substrates.

Our Shiitake liquid culture is prepared using carefully maintained commercial master cultures under sterile laboratory conditions to promote clean colonisation and healthy mycelial growth.

Why Use Shiitake Liquid Culture?

Using liquid culture allows growers to avoid the unpredictability associated with multispore inoculation and instead work with established genetics selected for healthy growth and reliable performance.

Shiitake liquid culture offers several advantages:

  • Faster colonisation compared to spores
  • Reliable and proven genetics
  • Vigorous mycelial growth
  • Reduced waiting time
  • Easy inoculation process
  • Suitable for grain spawn and substrate inoculation
  • Consistent cultivation performance

Shiitake mycelium is known for its strong colonisation characteristics and ability to produce dense healthy spawn when grown under suitable conditions.

What Makes Shiitake Mushrooms So Popular?

Shiitake mushrooms are highly regarded worldwide for their rich umami flavour and meaty texture. They are commonly used in soups, broths, stir fries, ramen dishes, rice bowls, sauces, and countless gourmet recipes.

Beyond their culinary popularity, Shiitake mushrooms naturally contain dietary fibre, vitamins, minerals, protein, and bioactive compounds including betaglucans and lentinan which continue to be researched for their potential nutritional properties.

Shiitake remains one of the most commercially cultivated gourmet mushroom species because of its flavour, versatility, and strong market demand.

Their naturally fast growing nature and attractive appearance also make them a favourite among home cultivators and commercial gourmet mushroom growers.

How Do You Use Shiitake Liquid Culture?

Step 1: Shake the Syringe
Before use, shake the syringe thoroughly to distribute the mycelium evenly throughout the liquid solution.

Step 2: Inoculate Sterile Grain Spawn
Inject approximately 3ml to 5ml of liquid culture into sterile grain spawn or suitable substrate using sterile technique.

Step 3: Allow Colonisation

Store inoculated grain in suitable incubation conditions while the Shiitake mycelium spreads throughout the grain.

Once fully colonised, the spawn can be transferred to hardwood based fruiting substrates.

Hardwood Mushrooms Liquid Culture Instructions

What Conditions Do Shiitake Mushrooms Prefer?

Shiitake mushrooms grow best on hardwood based substrates with stable humidity and airflow.

Recommended Growing Conditions

  • Colonisation Temperature: Around 22 to 25°C
  • Fruiting Temperature: Around 15 to 21°C
  • Humidity: High humidity recommended
  • Fresh Air Exchange: Moderate to high airflow
  • Lighting: Ambient light during fruiting

Recommended Substrates

Shiitake performs particularly well on:

  • Hardwood sawdust
  • Masters Mix
  • Supplemented hardwood substrate
  • Hardwood pellets

What's Included With Shiitake Liquid Culture?

Each order includes:

  • 1x 10ml sterile Shiitake liquid culture syringe
  • 1x 18g Sterile needle
  • 1x 70% Isopropyl alcohol preparation swab
  • Carefully selected clean genetics

All cultures are prepared under sterile laboratory conditions using tested master cultures to help ensure healthy contamination free mycelium.

How Should Shiitake Liquid Culture Be Stored?

For long term storage, Shiitake liquid culture should be refrigerated between 2°C and 8°C in a dark environment away from direct sunlight.

When stored correctly, liquid culture syringes can remain viable for many months.
