THE FIELD GUIDE / Liquid Culture

Get to know your grow.

What Is Reishi Liquid Culture?

Reishi liquid culture contains live Reishi mushroom mycelium suspended inside a sterile nutrient solution, allowing growers to inoculate grain spawn and hardwood substrate with vigorous, actively growing genetics. Unlike spores, which require germination and can produce inconsistent growth patterns, liquid culture provides established mycelium ready for reliable colonisation.

Reishi mushrooms, scientifically known as Ganoderma lucidum, are among the most recognised functional mushroom species in the world. Easily identified by their glossy lacquered appearance and deep reddish brown colouring, Reishi mushrooms have been cultivated and used traditionally throughout Asia for centuries.

Our Reishi liquid culture is produced using carefully maintained clean master cultures under sterile laboratory conditions to help ensure strong contamination free mycelial growth and dependable cultivation performance.

Why Choose Reishi Liquid Culture Instead of Spores?

Liquid culture allows growers to bypass the lengthy spore germination stage and begin directly with proven genetics already actively growing inside the syringe. This helps improve colonisation speed, reliability, and consistency throughout cultivation.
Reishi liquid culture is particularly popular among growers because Reishi mycelium is known for strong hardwood colonisation and dense healthy growth when provided with suitable conditions.

Benefits of Reishi liquid culture include:

  • Faster colonisation compared to spores
  • Proven lab grade genetics
  • Vigorous mycelial growth
  • Easier inoculation process
  • Reliable cultivation performance
  • Suitable for hardwood substrates
  • Cleaner and more predictable results

Using liquid culture also reduces the variability commonly associated with multispore inoculation methods.

What Is Reishi Mushroom Known For?

Reishi mushroom has become one of the most widely recognised functional mushroom species globally due to its long history of traditional use and its naturally occurring bioactive compounds including betaglucans, triterpenes, and polysaccharides currently being researched for their nutritional and wellness properties.

Unlike many gourmet mushroom species, Reishi is not typically cultivated for culinary use due to its woody texture and bitter flavour. Instead, it is commonly grown for use in:

  • Mushroom extracts
  • Powders
  • Functional mushroom blends
  • Capsules
  • Tinctures
  • Herbal teas

Reishi mushrooms are especially recognised for their striking glossy appearance and slow growing hardwood fruiting characteristics.

How Do You Use Reishi Liquid Culture?

Using Reishi liquid culture is straightforward and suitable for both beginner and experienced growers.

Step 1: Shake the Syringe
Shake the syringe thoroughly to distribute the live mycelium evenly throughout the nutrient solution.

Step 2: Inoculate Grain Spawn
Inject approximately 3ml to 5ml of liquid culture into sterile grain spawn using sterile technique.

Step 3: Allow Colonisation
Store the inoculated grain under suitable incubation conditions while the Reishi mycelium colonises the grain fully.

Once fully colonised, the spawn can be transferred to hardwood based fruiting substrate.

What Are the Ideal Growing Conditions for Reishi Mushrooms?

Reishi mushrooms perform best on hardwood based substrates with stable humidity and good airflow.

Recommended Conditions

  • Colonisation Temperature: Around 24 to 28°C
  • Fruiting Temperature: Around 18 to 27°C
  • Humidity: High humidity recommended
  • Fresh Air Exchange: Moderate airflow
  • Lighting: Indirect ambient light during fruiting

Recommended Substrates

Reishi mushrooms grow particularly well on:

  • Hardwood sawdust
  • Hardwood pellets
  • Masters Mix
  • Supplemented hardwood substrate

Reishi is especially well suited to bag cultivation methods using hardwood based substrate mixes.

What Is Included With Reishi Liquid Culture?

Each order includes:

  • 10ml sterile Reishi liquid culture syringe
  • Sterile needle
  • Alcohol preparation swab
  • Carefully selected clean genetics

All cultures are prepared under sterile laboratory conditions using tested master cultures to help ensure vigorous contamination free mycelium.

How Should Reishi Liquid Culture Be Stored?

For long term storage, Reishi liquid culture should be refrigerated between 2°C and 8°C in a dark environment away from direct sunlight.

When stored correctly, liquid culture syringes can remain viable for many months.
